CALGARY, AB: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is questioning the choice of the Alberta government to award a sole-source contract in Premier Redford’s Calgary-Elbow riding to the president of the Elbow Park Residents’ Association.  (Photo Alison Redford: Flickr/Dave Cornoyer)

According the media reports, the Alberta government awarded a $1.1 million untendered contract to Sprung Instant Structures to provide a temporary gymnasium while the Elbow Park School undergoes flood repairs.

On October 25th, the Elbow Park Residents’ Association tweeted “Good meeting with @Premier_Redford today. Discussion around upstream flood mitigation and rebuilding Elbow Park School.”

The President of the Elbow Park Residents’ Association is Tim Sprung. Mr. Sprung is also Vice President of Sprung Instant Structures, the company that received the sole-source contract.

“We never like to see sole-sourced contracts of this magnitude, let alone to the very same people who are in meeting with the Premier, ostensibly on behalf of the local residents, about these projects,” said CTF Alberta Director Derek Fildebrandt.

On October 29th it was announced that even though the nearby Earl Grey School was only operating at two-thirds capacity, the province would provide an additional $1.1 million for a separate gymnasium for the Elbow Park students in addition to over $4 million worth of portable classrooms.

“Albertans cut the government some slack after the flood, but we expect the government to not abuse that trust,” continued Fildebrandt. “The Premier and the Education ministry have some questions to answer about these sole-source contracts.”
